Halifax Bus Station Redevelopment has won Transport Project of the Year at the 2024 British Construction Industry Awards (BCIA).
The BCIA celebrates the best of the best across the construction and infrastructure industries, not just in what the industry achieves in terms of the projects delivered, but the incredible vital impact on health, wellbeing and prosperity of communities and the UK as a whole.
The project involved the complete rebuild of the station, improving facilities for passengers, as well as providing better access and enabling passengers to switch between bus services more easily. The new station also has several environmentally friendly features such as solar panels, electric bus charging points, cycle parking and a green roof covered in bee-friendly plants, in an effort to contribute to Leeds City Region's aim to be carbon neutral by 2038.
Roscoe provided civil and structural engineering services to help deliver the scheme alongside Willmott Dixon for West Yorkshire Combined Authority in partnership with Calderdale Council.
Speaking of the project, BCIA judges said:
"We were inspired by the solution which improved accessibility for all users, safety through deconflicting bus manoeuvres and security for the public through better visibility across the station. Topography and the position of the bus station as a gateway to the town was further enhanced through the design providing a 5th elevation of a green roof, benefiting from using rainwater run off as well as PV panels. All of this was achieved whilst keeping bus operations going during the build as well as sympathetically incorporating 3 Grade II listed buildings."
